Nature’s Sunshine Co-Founder Gene Hughes Passes Away

Gene Hughes leaves a legacy of helping others find health and prosperity through Nature’s Sunshine

LEHI, Utah, December 6, 2021 — Gene Hughes (September 28, 1930 – December 3, 2021), co-founder of Nature’s Sunshine Products (parent company of Synergy WorldWide), passed away peacefully at the age of 91, the company announced.

“Loved by both his immediate family and all of his Nature’s Sunshine family, Gene will be dearly missed, and his legacy will continue to leave an impact across our business,” said Nature’s Sunshine Chief Executive Officer Terrence Moorehead. “Gene loved this company, and his personal interactions with Consultants and employees forged relationships around the globe.”

Gene’s personal experience with the healing power of nature was the catalyst for the company’s founding and his pioneering spirit was integral to the growth of Nature’s Sunshine. For nearly 49 years, he helped revolutionize the herbal and natural wellness industry and gave rise to the modern supplement industry.

With his wife, Kristine, and family, Gene began encapsulating herbs and traveling the western United States to sell them to health food stores. They quickly found a market for their products among a growing number of complementary and alternative healthcare practitioners across the country, and the company blossomed, spreading to over 40 countries around the world.

Gene’s passion for quality, integrity, and service, together with a boundless energy and desire to share nature’s power with the world, propelled the company from a small, family-owned business to a multi-million-dollar global enterprise.

Having served as the first president of the company, Gene remained active with Nature’s Sunshine throughout his life. Known for his welcoming smile and heartfelt laughter, he formed lasting friendships with many employees and leaders in the field. Gene viewed the business as an extension of his family, and he created a culture of caring for employees, distributors and customers that endeared him to those with whom he worked.

“Gene dedicated his life to helping others discover greater wellbeing and opportunity through Nature’s Sunshine,” said Moorehead. “We will continue to honour his life and memory through our efforts to share nature’s healing power with the world.”

Gene joins his wife and fellow Nature’s Sunshine co-founder, Kristine, who passed away in February 2020. He is survived by fellow Nature’s Sunshine co-founder, Pauline Hughes, as well as his seven children, Craig Hughes, Chris Hughes, Heidi Hughes Hastings, Sherston Hughes Faux, Julie Hughes King, Jeni Hughes McCoard and Kristi Hughes Dowding, and 37 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

For those wishing to honour his memory, Gene’s family has asked for donations to the Impact Foundation on his behalf in lieu of gifts or flowers.

The next tool to be made available is our new Synergy Europe website, specifically focusing on customer enrolment and ordering. After a year of development, it is in the final steps of end to end testing and validation. We will roll out this new website in a phased approach, market by market, adding new functionality over the coming months in phases.

As mentioned, the first phase of the website is focused on the shopping journey for customers. You will find that the new website is more customer friendly, with a fresh and modern look. Based on our current deployment status, we expect to make it available shortly, starting with the UK, and continuing with Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Slovenia. Following those markets, we will continue rolling out the new customer website for the remaining European markets day by day.

Phase 1 key components we can’t wait for you to try and use:

1. Design

Who does not love a little makeover? We wanted to accompany the new tool with a fresh, modern look. As Synergy WorldWide continues to grow, we are thrilled for this new visual language to support and bring higher energy in all that we do.

2. Simplified and improved Customer experiences

A quick, easy and convenient shopping experience. The new website is focused on an improved user experience and user friendliness. We cannot wait to hear from you and your customers about this improved experience.

3. Retail bonus automation

You can now automatically earn the retail bonus through the use of the new website. As you enrol new customers, they will pay the customer price, which is 20% higher than the Team Member price for regular orders, or 10% higher than the Team Member price for subscription orders, pre VAT. The difference in price that they pay goes straight back to you as their sponsoring Team Member and paid as a retail bonus with that month’s commission earnings.

Please note that you will continue to use the old website pages for Team Member enrolment until the new phase of the website is launched early in 2022. However, we recommend that you use the new Team Member APP for an improved Team Member enrolment experience in the interim.

And remember, there is much more coming as we continue to roll out our complete digital transformation, including the new affiliate program, where your customers can get free products through sharing and recommending to others.

And as the year end is approaching, please remember to take advantage of the current pricing ahead of the small price increase that is scheduled for January 1st.

Pricing for Synergy Europe has been kept unchanged for many years, however with increasing costs and expenses related with manufacturing, ingredients, and transport – we are making a small adjustment. This adjustment will allow for several benefits to Team Members and customers: overall improvements to the commission pay-out currency rate and free shipping on Subscribe and Save orders.

Starting 01.01.2022, we will implement the new simplified pricing as announced during the Summit. The wholesale (regular team member) pricing will be increased by 7%. Pricing will be divided into Team Member pricing and Customer pricing where the base is Team Member Regular price.

For Team Members the new wholesale price will be +7%. The Team Member Subscribe and Save price will be 10% less than the Team Member Regular price.

For customers, the regular price is 20% above Team Member regular price (wholesale). A customer Subscribe and Save gets a 10% discount on regular price.

Note: Subscribe and Save refers to the monthly subscription ordering system previously known as Autoship.

Customer simplification

Forget about complex description. We are making it simple for you, your team, and your customers. Team Members and customers will have access to regular prices, known separately as Wholesale (for Team Members) & Retail (for customers).

Subscribe & Save

Subscribe and Save (previously known as Autoship) is a monthly subscription designed to help automate and secure easy delivery of your favourite products. Not only does it simplify life, but your subscription also comes with benefits. Any Subscribe and Save order is 10% less than regular price. If you are a Team Member, this is calculated on the wholesale price. If you are a customer this is calculated on the retail price. Not enough? We are proud to announce that any Subscribe and Save orders will have possibility of free shipping.

If you are a Team Member on Subscribe and Save, you will get free shipping on your monthly Subscribe and Save order above 200 CV. You will also get the same pricing on any additional orders placed when you have an active Subscription.

As a customer you get free shipping on your Subscribe and Save order (regardless of size). Any additional orders will be given regular pricing.

Commission payout currency rate increase

Eager to earn more as an independent Team Member for Synergy WorldWide? Consider this commission payout increase a salary increase. Depending on your market and regular currency you are in for a treat regardless. Payout rates are increasing by 7.4% for Euros, 8.3% for Pounds and 23% for Norwegian Kroner.

Terms and examples

Grandfathered - We are retiring the customer type “Preferred Customer”. Those that are currently Preferred Customers will remain so (Grandfathered to the same structure as Team Members) unless they cancel or drop to Retail Customer Type. The drop happens twice a year. For those who have not ordered within the set 6-month periods (January-June or July-December) they will be dropped to retail customer. This is the same process and drop period as for Team Members.

Retail Bonus – A bonus pay-out to Team Members calculated by taking the pre-VAT amount that their Retail Customer spent on a product (either Regular Price or Subscription Price) minus the pre-VAT Team Member Regular Price (wholesale) of that product. This is paid with their commission’s earnings in the following month.

Example: Jane is a customer and purchases a product online as a one-time order with regular price for 108 euro (pre-vat). Her Team Member sponsor (James) gets the retail bonus based on this purchase. This is the difference between what the customer paid and the Team Member regular price. In this case Jane paid 108 euros (pre-vat) and the regular Team Member price would be 90 euro (pre vat), hence the retail bonus would be 108-90 = 18 euros directly as a bonus to the Team Member.

During Summit 2021, we were pleased to announce exciting new tools and changes that would be part of our Synergy re-launch, starting December 1st and continuing throughout 2022.

The first rollout and Implementation of these changes is linked to our core systems, functionality, and processes. It will allow Team Members to improve their business and will simplify processes and clearly outline benefits and differences between being a Team Member and customer.

This week we will begin the upgrade and replacement of our promotion and pricing systems to accommodate the new app and website. This includes replacing the way every order is processed, including subscription orders.

Following the replacement of those vital components, we will launch the new Team Member app, expected to be available the 2nd week of December.

Next, we are excited to launch the new Customer website, starting with the markets of UK, Norway, Italy, Finland, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, and followed by the other markets, starting in mid-December.

With this phased approach, we will be able to implement the improved commission payout rates, and free shipping with subscription orders on January 1st. Due to this, we will delay the product price increase to January 1st. We will publish the new price lists by December 15th, so you can properly prepare and communicate with your organisation and customers.

In summary, our timeline is as follows:

Core pricing and promotion engine replacement: 1st week of December
Team member app: 2nd week of December
Website launch: starting 3rd week of December and continuing in a phased roll out by market
New commission rates, subscribe-and-save free shipping and related price increase: Jan 1, 2022

These new tools and changes represent countless hours of effort and millions of dollars of expense over the past year. We are sorry for the delay, but we are excited to finally start delivering them to you, and help you to Be a Force as you Leave a Legacy of health, wealth and wisdom.

We will continue to send updates and details throughout the month as these exciting new tools are made available. And keep preparing for many additional tools that will be announced and launched in January and beyond.
